Why SmartPlug over a twist-lock inlet

A conventional twist-lock shore power connector relies on spring-loaded contact pins that can loosen slightly with vibration and years of use, and that loose contact is a common cause of the connector overheating under load. SmartPlug uses a flat-blade connector with a positive locking latch instead, which keeps contact pressure consistent and runs cooler under the same current draw, particularly relevant on boats pulling higher loads from air conditioning or battery chargers.

Fitting one means replacing the boat's inlet, so the new unit needs to match the existing panel cutout or be adapted to it, and the current rating, commonly 30A or 50A, needs to match both the cordset and the boat's onboard wiring and breaker. Mixing a higher-rated cordset with a lower-rated inlet does not increase what the circuit can actually carry.

Cordsets connect a SmartPlug inlet to a standard marina pedestal at the shore end, so no changes are needed at the dock itself, only at the boat's own inlet and the cable running to it.
