BMS or Battery Protect: what each one does

A Victron BMS and a Battery Protect module solve different problems, and it is worth being clear on which one a given lithium installation actually needs. The BMS monitors individual cell voltages within a lithium battery and, on a compatible battery and BMS combination, can signal connected chargers and inverters to stop charging or reduce load before a cell goes outside safe limits, effectively protecting the battery from the rest of the system.

A Battery Protect module works the other way round: it is a load disconnect that protects the battery from over-discharge by cutting power to connected circuits below a set voltage, regardless of whether the battery itself has any active management. Many lithium installations use both, with the BMS communicating with a Multi or inverter/charger over VE.Bus to manage charging, and a Battery Protect isolating non-essential loads if the bank still drops too low. Check which Victron battery and charging components are already fitted before adding either, since compatibility depends on the exact combination in use.
