MPPT sizing and matching to your panels
MPPT controllers track a solar array's optimum operating voltage rather than simply clamping it to battery voltage, which is what a PWM controller does, and typically recover more usable energy from the same panels, particularly on cooler days or with panels wired in series. Sizing an MPPT means checking the array's open-circuit voltage against the controller's maximum input rating, and its rated charge current against your battery bank, not just matching panel wattage to controller wattage.
SmartSolar units have Bluetooth monitoring built in and connect directly to the VictronConnect app; BlueSolar controllers are the same charging hardware without built-in Bluetooth, so a separate dongle is needed if wireless monitoring matters to you. Charge profiles are configurable for AGM, gel, flooded and lithium chemistries, and getting the absorption and float voltages right for your specific battery type has a real effect on both charging speed and battery lifespan.
