Class A or Class B: what differs

Class A transponders transmit at higher power and report position more frequently, and are the type most commercial vessels are required to carry, while Class B units transmit less often and at lower power, which suits leisure and smaller craft that want to be seen without the cost and complexity of a full Class A fit. Both need an MMSI number programmed in before use, obtained through the appropriate maritime authority, and both need their own GPS antenna as well as a VHF antenna, either dedicated or shared through a compatible splitter.

Check whether the AIS output you need is a standalone transponder or a receive-only unit, since some sailors want to see traffic on the chartplotter without transmitting their own position, and B&G's units integrate AIS targets directly onto the chartplot alongside radar and chart data once networked over NMEA 2000. Confirm your existing antenna setup can support a new transceiver before ordering, particularly if a splitter is already sharing frequencies.
