Choosing a B&G drive for sail steering
The right B&G drive unit depends on your boat's steering type and the torque needed to turn the rudder under load, not just the length of the vessel. Hydraulic steering typically pairs with a hydraulic linear drive or pump, while mechanical or wheel steering often uses a mechanical linear or rotary drive fitted directly into the existing steering linkage, so check which category your boat falls into before choosing a unit.
Drive units connect back to the autopilot computer and course computer over the boat's NMEA 2000 or SimNet backbone, so the drive itself is only part of a wider system that also needs a rudder reference and a compass or heading sensor to work properly.
