How Garmin's cameras integrate with an MFD
Garmin's camera systems are built to feed directly into its own chartplotters, which is the main advantage over fitting a third party camera alongside a Garmin MFD: video appears as another data source within the same interface rather than needing a separate monitor or split screen input. Fixed cameras generally cover stern or engine room monitoring, where a static wide view is enough, while thermal cameras are aimed at night navigation and situational awareness, where picking out a person or vessel matters more than a wide field of view.
Whether a given camera connects over standard video or over the network depends on the specific model and how current the display's software is, so it is worth checking this against your MFD before assuming a new camera will show up automatically. As with most systems built around a single manufacturer's network, mixing in cameras from another brand is possible but usually needs an additional interface rather than a direct connection.
