Why dome size affects performance

A larger radome houses a longer antenna array, which produces a narrower beam and generally better target separation and range, so the choice between dome sizes is a trade-off between performance and how much space and weight the mast, arch or pole can carry. On a smaller sailing boat, minimising weight aloft usually matters more than the extra range a bigger dome would give.

Mounting height affects usable range more than most people expect, since radar range is limited largely by the radio horizon, so raising the scanner even modestly can extend detection distance more than stepping up a dome size. Check the mounting surface can take the dome's weight and the leverage of wind load on a mast-mounted position, and route the network cable to avoid tight bends that strain the connector over time. Ask us if you need help checking mounting weight limits.
