What a DC-DC converter actually does
A DC-DC converter's job is to take power at one voltage and deliver it at another, most commonly bridging a 24V house system fed from a 12V engine alternator, or the reverse. Isolated converters keep the input and output circuits electrically separate, which matters where galvanic isolation between systems is needed, for example to avoid interference between an engine's electrical system and sensitive electronics; non-isolated converters are simpler and often smaller but share a common negative between input and output.
Some converters are also used purely as chargers, taking a rough or unregulated DC input and producing a clean, regulated charge current for a battery bank rather than converting voltage as such. Either way, the unit needs to be rated for the actual continuous current the connected load or battery will draw, not just its peak, and mounted somewhere with enough airflow, since converters generate meaningful heat under sustained load and most derate their output as they warm up.
