Dome size and where it can see

Satellite TV domes are sized by diameter, and a bigger dome generally holds a larger reflector and locks onto a weaker signal for longer as you move away from the satellite's footprint. Smaller domes suit coastal and near-shore cruising where a strong signal is available; larger units are worth considering for longer passages or higher latitudes where the signal angle is lower.

Mounting position matters as much as size. The dome needs a clear, unobstructed view through its full range of tilt and rotation, so radar arches, masts, exhaust stacks and even a raised bimini can cause dropout as the boat swings at anchor or heels under sail. Cabling runs from the dome to the receiver over a dedicated coaxial feed, and cable length and quality affect signal loss, so it is worth planning the route before cutting any cable to length.
