Matching a mount to your radar type
Mount choice starts with where the radar can actually get a clear, elevated view: a mast mount suits sailing boats and smaller powerboats where the mast already provides height, while an arch or T-top mount is the natural fit on boats with a targa arch or hardtop already in place. Rail and pulpit mounts work well where deck space is limited and there is no arch or mast to use, and deck mounts keep the scanner low and out of the way on smaller open boats.
Whichever style you choose, the mount needs to be rated for the weight and windage of your specific radar, radome or open array, since a rotating open array in particular puts continuous vibration and load through its fixing points over years of use. Combination mounts that carry a satcom dome or additional antenna alongside the radar are worth considering if you plan to add satellite connectivity later, as retrofitting a second mount afterwards is more disruptive than fitting one capable platform from the start.
