Replacing autopilot drive components
Autopilot spares need to match the generation of system fitted, since Garmin's drive units, pumps and course computers have changed across product lines and are not always cross-compatible even within the same broad family. Before ordering a replacement pump or ram, confirm the boat's steering type, hydraulic, mechanical or electric, as well as the autopilot model, since the drive component is selected for the steering system, not just the electronics.
A fluxgate compass or rate gyro that has drifted often gets blamed on the course computer, so it is worth checking calibration before replacing the more expensive component. Cabling between the course computer, drive unit and control head is generally NMEA 2000 based on current systems, which makes locating a fault easier than on older proprietary wiring.
