Transom, thru-hull or in-hull: what to pick
The mounting position matters more than the model name. A transom transducer is the easiest to fit and works well on planing hulls, but it can cavitate at speed or in a following sea. A thru-hull unit sits in clean water below the hull and generally gives better high-speed performance, while an in-hull transducer, bonded to the inside of a solid GRP hull with no penetration at all, trades some depth capability for a completely dry installation.
Garmin's CHIRP transducers are matched to specific display and sonar module combinations, and the connector on the transducer cable needs to suit your particular unit rather than just the frequency range; a transducer that covers the right frequencies will still not work if the plug does not match. Check the hull's deadrise angle too, since a transducer designed for a flat-bottomed hull will not read correctly on a deep-vee without an angled shim.
If you are moving from an older Garmin unit, it is worth checking whether the existing transducer and cable can carry over before buying new.
