Depth alarms and sensor placement
Shallow water alarms are only as trustworthy as the calibration behind them, so it is worth setting the transducer's keel offset correctly when it is first installed, rather than relying on the factory default. A transducer mounted too close to the bow or too far outboard on a deep-vee hull can read turbulence rather than clean water at speed, which shows up as an alarm that triggers falsely once the boat is on the plane.
Depth-only transducers are the simplest option, while combined depth, speed and temperature sensors add a paddlewheel and thermistor in the same housing, worth it if your display already shows those channels. Data passes to the plotter over NMEA 2000 or the older NMEA 0183 protocol depending on the age of the instrument, and a mismatch between the two is a common reason a new transducer appears to show no reading at all.
Replacing a failed transducer with the same footprint avoids re-drilling the hull.
