Iridium versus Inmarsat for offshore comms
Iridium's satellite network gives genuinely pole-to-pole coverage using a constellation of low-orbit satellites, which suits anyone crossing an ocean or cruising at high latitudes where other systems lose coverage. Inmarsat generally offers higher data speeds for weather routing and email over a broader working area but does not reach quite as far into the polar regions, so the choice often comes down to where the voyage actually takes you rather than one system being better in every respect.
A handheld satellite phone suits basic voice and text communication in an emergency, while a fixed terminal is for anyone who wants regular email, weather files or tracking underway rather than occasional calls. None of this replaces a VHF radio and DSC for close-range safety communication, so satellite systems are best treated as the offshore complement to VHF rather than a substitute for it.
