Matching a transducer to your hull
Transducer choice starts with the hull, not the electronics. A through-hull transducer needs a fairing block on a deadrise hull and gives the cleanest signal at speed, a transom mount is the simplest retrofit on smaller boats but can suffer turbulence at higher speeds, and an in-hull transducer avoids any penetration below the waterline but only works through solid GRP, never a cored or stepped hull.
Frequency and beam angle decide what you actually see on screen. Single and dual frequency units suit basic depth and fish arches, CHIRP sweeps a range of frequencies for sharper target separation, and side scan or down imaging transducers need a wider mounting area and a flatter run of hull to perform properly.
Check the connector before ordering, since many sonar modules use a proprietary plug rather than a generic one, and a transducer built for one brand's black box will not simply plug into another's.
