The Raymarine RCU-1 is a handheld wireless remote for Raymarine Evolution autopilots, letting you engage, adjust and disengage the pilot from anywhere on board. This is the remote only: it needs a WG-1 Wireless Gateway on the SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 network, plus a p70-series head or Axiom chartplotter as the main pilot controller.

Description

The Raymarine RCU-1 puts control of an Evolution autopilot in your hand. Wear it on the supplied lanyard or leave it in its cradle, and you can engage the pilot, make course changes and drop back to standby while trimming sails, working on the foredeck or tending fishing gear, at up to around 30 m (clear line of sight) from the gateway.

The colour screen is readable in direct sunlight and can show up to six pages of NMEA 2000 data such as heading, speed, depth and wind. Point and Go lets you aim the remote in the direction you want to head and set the pilot onto that course. For single-handed sailors, Solo Sailor mode turns the boat head to wind if the remote loses its connection while the pilot is steering to wind, and a Lost Connection MOB alarm can alert the crew if the person carrying the remote goes over the side. The handset is rated IP67 and runs on two AA batteries.

This listing is the RCU-1 handset only (A80835), for boats that already have a WG-1 Wireless Gateway, or as an extra remote: one WG-1 supports up to three RCU-1s. If you do not yet have a gateway, choose the RCU-1 with WG-1 kit (E70718), which comes pre-paired. The RCU-1 works only with Raymarine Evolution autopilots (EV-1 or EV-2 sensor on software v3.21 or later) and cannot be the only controller in the system. If you are not sure your autopilot is compatible, get in touch and our team will advise before you order.

Will the RCU-1 work with my older Raymarine autopilot?
Only if it is an Evolution autopilot. The RCU-1 needs an Evolution system with an EV-1 or EV-2 sensor core running software v3.21 or later. SPX, X-Series and older SeaTalk 1 autopilots, and other makes of autopilot, are not compatible.
I already have a WG-1. Is this the right part?
Yes. A80835 is the RCU-1 handset on its own, for boats that already have a WG-1 Wireless Gateway or as a second or third remote. It needs pairing to the gateway on first use, which is done from the remote. If you do not have a gateway, choose the RCU-1 with WG-1 kit (E70718) instead.
Do I need a WG-1 Wireless Gateway?
Yes. Every RCU-1 installation needs a WG-1 on the SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 network. The remote cannot pair directly with an Axiom chartplotter over Bluetooth.
Can the RCU-1 be the only autopilot controller on board?
No. The system must also have a p70-series control head or an Axiom / Axiom 2-series chartplotter (LightHouse 4 v4.11.103 or later) acting as the main pilot controller. The RCU-1 then works alongside it.
How many RCU-1 remotes can one gateway support?
A single WG-1 supports up to three RCU-1 remotes at the same time, provided no other wireless devices are paired to it.
Can I run trolling patterns from the RCU-1?
No. Pattern steering and Jog Steer are not available from the remote. If one of these modes is engaged from another controller, the RCU-1 shows the mode but its course-change buttons are disabled.
Does the RCU-1 float?
No. Raymarine supplies a lanyard and a cradle so you can wear it or stow it safely.
Can I use rechargeable batteries?
Yes. The remote takes two AA batteries and works with alkaline, lithium or rechargeable NiMH / NiCd cells. Rechargeables must be charged outside the remote.
What is Solo Sailor mode?
A safety feature for single-handed sailing. With Solo Sailor enabled and the pilot steering to wind on a boat set up as a sailing vessel, if the remote loses its connection for about 10 seconds the system raises a Man Overboard alarm and turns the boat head to wind. Raymarine advises not to use it with crew aboard.
