Antenna position matters more than router

Antenna position generally has a bigger effect on a 4G or 5G system's performance than the router itself. Mounting the external antenna as high as practical, with a clear line of sight towards the coast, extends usable range far more than swapping to a higher-specified router with the antenna left low down in a cockpit locker. Where a boat already carries a WiFi extender for marina WiFi, a cellular router and the extender can generally run alongside each other, giving a fallback between shore WiFi and cellular data depending on which is available.

5G currently gives faster speeds close to shore but with a shorter effective range than 4G, so for most cruising grounds a system that falls back to 4G automatically is more useful than one chasing 5G alone. A SIM with a data plan covering the areas you cruise is a separate decision from the hardware, and UK and EU coverage can differ significantly between providers once you're away from major ports.
