What separates one fixed VHF from another
Every current fixed VHF for leisure use runs DSC (digital selective calling) linked to your registered MMSI, so a distress call sends position and vessel identity automatically rather than relying on someone hearing a voice mayday on channel 16. Where sets differ is in built-in GPS (some take a position feed from the network instead), AIS receive capability shown directly on the radio's own screen, and whether a second station can be run from a wired or wireless handset at another helm position.
Output power for fixed sets is effectively standardised at 25 watts, so range comes down more to antenna height and coax quality than the radio itself; a masthead-mounted antenna on a sailing boat will consistently out-range the same radio on a lower-mounted powerboat antenna.
Check what the radio needs to integrate with before buying: NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 for position and AIS data, and confirm your MMSI is registered before the unit goes in, since DSC features are of limited use without it.
