Choosing between HDS PRO and Elite FS
Choosing between Lowrance's ranges usually comes down to how you fish rather than boat size. HDS PRO runs a faster processor and a brighter, sunlight-viewable screen, so it suits anyone running split screen sonar, radar and mapping together; Elite FS covers the same core sonar and Active Imaging feature set in a simpler, single-screen unit. Both share the same NMEA 2000 backbone, so a display bought now can be expanded later.
The transducer is where most installs go wrong. Active Imaging and ActiveTarget each need their own transducer, and ActiveTarget in particular needs a dedicated mount, often on a trolling motor rather than the transom. Check hull material and deadrise before ordering, since skimmer, thru-hull and in-hull options are not interchangeable.
Ghost trolling motors add GPS anchoring and autopilot-style routes, and can be steered directly from a paired HDS PRO or Elite FS over the same network, so it is worth planning the transducer and motor together rather than as separate purchases.
